Indiana Property Tax Exemptions: Are You Missing Valuable Savings?
Don’t Leave Property Tax Money On The Table!
Many Indiana homeowners are unknowingly paying higher property taxes because they have not applied for available exemptions, deductions, or credits. This article explains how programs like the Homestead Deduction, senior credits, veteran exemptions, and disability-related tax benefits can reduce property taxes and why homeowners should review their eligibility regularly. With recent Indiana law changes impacting how some tax savings are applied, now is the ideal time to verify that you are receiving every benefit available.

Don’t Leave Money on the Table: Indiana Homeowners Should Review Their Property Tax Exemptions
Many Indiana homeowners are paying more in property taxes than they need to simply because they never applied for available deductions and credits. Others may qualify for additional exemptions and not even realize it. With property taxes becoming a growing concern across Indiana, now is the perfect time to review your current exemptions and make sure you are maximizing every benefit available to you.
In Allen County and throughout Indiana, several property tax deductions and credits exist for homeowners, seniors, disabled individuals, veterans, and surviving spouses. Some of these programs were recently updated under Senate Enrolled Act 1, which converted certain deductions into direct tax credits beginning with taxes payable in 2026.
The reality is that many homeowners assume these exemptions happen automatically. In some cases they do not. Others may have qualified years ago but never filed the paperwork. And if ownership changed due to refinancing, transferring title, or estate planning, exemptions can sometimes fall off unexpectedly.
The Homestead Deduction Is the Big One
If you own and occupy your home as your primary residence, the Homestead Deduction is one of the most important tax benefits available in Indiana. This deduction can significantly reduce your taxable assessed value and lower your property tax bill.
The key assumption many homeowners make is:
“If I bought a house, I probably already have it.”
That is not always true.
A refinance, deed change, trust transfer, or inherited property situation can sometimes interrupt or remove the deduction. New homeowners are especially encouraged to verify their status after closing.
Seniors May Qualify for Additional Property Tax Savings
Indiana also offers additional property tax relief for homeowners over age 65. Recent legislative changes expanded these benefits and converted some deductions into direct credits.
Eligible homeowners may qualify for:
- Over 65 Credit
- Over 65 Circuit Breaker Credit
- Additional protections limiting large year-over-year tax increases
Income limits and filing deadlines apply, and proof of income may be required.
One important point that often gets overlooked:
Many seniors assume rising home values automatically disqualify them. Under the newer rules, some assessed value limitations were removed, potentially allowing more homeowners to qualify than before.
Disabled Individuals and Veterans Should Review Eligibility
Indiana also offers benefits for:
- Disabled homeowners
- Blind homeowners
- Disabled veterans
- Certain surviving spouses of veterans
Some of these programs now provide direct credits instead of deductions, which can create more meaningful savings on the final tax bill.
Veteran-related exemptions can become especially complex because eligibility may depend on disability ratings, service history, and ownership structure. A common mistake is assuming that because someone receives VA benefits, all property tax benefits apply automatically. They typically do not. Applications usually still need to be filed with the county.
Why This Matters Right Now For Property Tax
Property tax frustration is growing across Indiana because assessments have risen quickly in many areas. But higher assessments do not necessarily mean homeowners are stuck without options.
The more accurate way to think about this is:
- Assessment value is one part of the equation
- Exemptions and credits are another
- Many homeowners focus only on the first part
Reviewing your exemptions may not completely eliminate a tax increase, but it could meaningfully reduce it.
How to Check Your Property Tax Status
Allen County homeowners can review available deductions and application forms directly through the county’s deduction and credits page:

And additional Indiana deduction forms are available through the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance:
Final Thought
One of the biggest financial mistakes homeowners make is assuming someone else already checked this for them. County records are not perfect, ownership situations change, and tax laws evolve over time.
If you own a home in Indiana, especially if you are a senior, veteran, disabled homeowner, or recently changed ownership/title situations, it is worth taking a few minutes to verify that you are receiving every exemption and credit available to you.
