Why Hinkle Fieldhouse Is the Cathedral of Indiana Basketball

Hinkle Fieldhouse Hosted the Famous 1954 Indiana State Championship

Hinkle Fieldhouse is more than a basketball arena—it’s a symbol of Indiana’s deep-rooted love for the game. Opened in 1928 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, it once stood as the largest basketball arena in the nation. Best known for hosting the legendary 1954 Milan High School state championship that inspired Hoosiers, Hinkle remains a living monument to tradition, history, and the timeless atmosphere of Indiana basketball.

Hinkle Fieldhouse – Cathedral of Indiana Basketball

When people talk about basketball royalty in Indiana, they usually think of the Pacers or big-time college arenas. But many Hoosiers will tell you the most iconic basketball gym in the state isn’t in the NBA at all. It’s Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Located on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Hinkle Fieldhouse opened its doors in 1928. At the time, it was the largest basketball arena in the United States. For decades, it stood as a symbol of how deeply basketball is woven into Indiana’s identity.

Hinkle is best known nationally for hosting the legendary 1954 Indiana high school state championship. Tiny Milan High School defeated powerhouse Muncie Central in a true David-versus-Goliath moment. That game later inspired the classic film Hoosiers, cementing Hinkle Fieldhouse as sacred ground for basketball fans everywhere.

What makes Hinkle special isn’t just its history. It’s the atmosphere. The wooden seats, the cathedral-style architecture, and the way sound echoes through the building make every game feel timeless. You don’t just watch basketball there. You feel it.

Nearly a century later, Hinkle Fieldhouse remains a living monument to Indiana’s basketball obsession. It’s proof that in this state, basketball isn’t just a sport. It’s tradition, community, and pride passed down through generations.
