On August 29, 1958, Michael Joseph Jackson was born at 2300 Jackson Street in Gary. The Jackson family home was small, crowded, and filled with music. Michael was the eighth of ten children, and even at a young age, his natural talent stood out. His father, Joseph Jackson, recognized that his children had something special and began guiding them toward performing.
The city of Gary, known for its steel mills and working-class spirit, played a real role in shaping the Jackson family’s determination. Life wasn’t glamorous, but it was full of rhythm, community, and drive. Those elements would go on to influence Michael’s voice, style, and performance energy.
The Rise of the Jackson 5
Before they were a national sensation, The Jackson 5 were simply a group of local kids performing in talent shows, school events, and neighborhood clubs across northern Indiana and Chicago. Crowds noticed the same thing Motown would later discover: Michael had star power beyond his years.
In 1967, the Jackson 5 auditioned for Motown Records. Berry Gordy signed them, and the family relocated to Los Angeles. Within a few short years, songs like “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There” topped charts around the world. Michael Jackson’s voice became instantly recognizable.
But no matter how far the Jacksons traveled, their Hoosier roots followed.
