If you owe more on your home than it’s worth, you’re not alone—and you’re not out of options. Being upside down on your mortgage can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategy, you can protect your finances and avoid foreclosure.
Here are three smart paths to consider:
1. Refinance (If You Qualify)
If your credit is strong and you’re current on payments, refinancing could lower your rate or switch you to a more manageable loan term. Even if you don’t have equity, government-backed programs may help.
2. Negotiate a Short Sale
If you need to sell but can’t cover the full mortgage balance, a short sale allows you to sell for less than you owe—with lender approval. It’s not ideal for your credit, but it’s far less damaging than foreclosure.
3. Rent It Out
