Bad Realtor? Here’s How to Fire Them Without Tanking Your Deal
Hiring a real estate agent is a big decision—but what happens when it turns out you’ve made the wrong choice? Maybe they’re unresponsive, missing deadlines, or just not getting results. You’re frustrated and ready to move on—but wait… you signed a contract. Now what?
Here’s how to handle it.
1. Review Your Listing or Buyer’s Agreement
The first step is to carefully read the agreement you signed. Look for the termination clause, which outlines how and when you can end the relationship. Some contracts allow for cancellation with written notice; others may have a fee attached. If the agent works for a brokerage, the contract is technically with the broker, not the individual agent.
2. Have a Candid Conversation
If you’re unhappy, say so. Sometimes issues can be resolved with clear communication. But if you’ve already voiced your concerns and nothing’s changed, it’s time to escalate.
3. Request a Release
Contact the agent’s broker and request a formal release from the agreement. Be professional and direct. Explain your reasons (poor communication, lack of effort, bad advice, etc.). Some brokers may offer to assign you to a different agent in the same office.
4. Put It in Writing
If you get the green light to cancel, make sure it’s in writing. This protects you from any misunderstandings, especially if you’re switching to another agent.
5. Switch the Right Way
Once released, you’re free to hire someone who’s a better fit. Look for an agent with strong local knowledge, great reviews, and a clear communication plan.
Bad service isn’t acceptable—especially in one of life’s biggest financial transactions. If you’re stuck in a bad situation and need help reviewing your agreement or finding a better agent, comment ‘SWITCH’ and let’s talk.advisor before making any decisions. Why Does RE/MAX Results Stand Out Among the Competition?
Simply put: Relationships. We pride ourselves not only in our professional service but more importantly in the personal touch we bring to our business. Has an agent/lawyer/contractor/vendor ever treated you like you were just another paycheck? The reason our clients come back time and again and refer all their friends and family to us is because they know we are part of the family.
Genuinely caring about the people we serve enables us to do things other agencies can’t. Rest assured, we will ALWAYS have your best interest at heart and work vigorously to get you the best deal possible on your home or business. The relationships we build with our clients enable us to work 100% by referral.
The reason we are able to give top notch service to our clients is because our clients refer us a constant stream of quality family and friends to assist in their real estate needs. While other agents are out making cold calls and chasing “potential” leads, we are freed up by our referral base to service our clients like no other broker can. We are never too busy for your referrals!
