Hoosier History Bite: How Did New Haven Get Its Name?
Just east of Fort Wayne lies New Haven, Indiana, a community with deep roots and a name that traces back to New England.
Founded in 1839 by Henry Burgess, a pioneer from New Haven, Connecticut, the town was named in honor of his former home. Like many early settlers, Burgess brought with him a sense of identity and tradition, and naming the new settlement after his hometown was a way to preserve that legacy on the Indiana frontier.
New Haven’s growth was fueled by transportation. In its early years, it sat along the route of the Wabash & Erie Canal—a massive infrastructure project that, at its peak, stretched 468 miles from Toledo to Evansville. The canal brought trade, commerce, and opportunity, helping New Haven flourish as goods and people flowed through the region.
As the canal era waned, railroads took over as the engine of growth. Thanks to its canal roots and advantageous location, New Haven transitioned smoothly into a rail and industrial hub, a role that shaped its economy and character well into the 20th century.
Today, New Haven is a vibrant suburb of Fort Wayne, offering a mix of small-town charm, rich history, and easy access to the amenities of a growing metro area. But it all started with one man—Henry Burgess—who planted a piece of Connecticut in the heart of Indiana.
Recent Developments: A New Chapter for New Haven
New Haven continues to evolve—recent headlines hint at a bold future for this historic town:
- Google broke ground in 2024 on a $2 billion data center campus just outside New Haven as part of its “Project Zodiac.” The facility will support Google Cloud and AI computing and is expected to bring hundreds of construction and permanent tech jobs to the region.
- A proposal from Full House Resorts to build a $500 million casino resort in New Haven generated excitement and debate in 2024. The project included plans for a luxury hotel, entertainment venue, and spa. However, as of early 2025, legislation to approve the move of the casino license was withdrawn without a vote, putting the project on pause. While not officially canceled, any future development would require renewed legislative support and local approval.
As New Haven balances its historic roots with modern ambitions, it remains a place to watch—where the past meets the future in compelling ways.
